Email Security

The currently prominent email-sending protocol is SMTP. Unfortunately, for the most of us, SMTP was not developed with authenticity and confidentiality in mind. An example of an authenticity problem is SPAM which incorporates email spoofing. An example of a confidence problem is that emails are sent in plain-text.

Sometimes, however, crucial information needs to be sent (perhaps from the CFO to the CEO) via email, in which case the security-levels provided by SMTP does not suffice. The email needs to be encrypted; this is a confidentiality problem.

Other times, a bank notice needs to be sent to a client; this notice however does not need to be encrypted. However, the end-user, i.e. the client, needs to make sure that this is actually the bank sending the email: it is an "authenticity" problem.

The solution to this dilemma is to use a set of cryptographic techniques to provide higher security assurance. The techniques exist within the realm of "Public Key" cryptography, and is currently implemented in the windows application PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). In the next issue of our monthly newsletter, we will explore how PGP works and how it can be installed.
